Rise Phoenix's exciting
Youth Mentor Scheme
With the help of local schools and arts
organisations each year we recruit 15 very special young
people (aged 16 to 18) to take part in this part-time scheme.
A tailored programme of activities is negotiated with each
young person and includes:
- residential induction course at Pertwood Farm, Wiltshire
- a number of ‘work-based learning’ opportunities supporting Rise Phoenix projects in schools and community settings in London
- ‘work–based learning’ opportunities supporting other organisations linked to the Youth Mentor’s areas of interest e.g. environment, business
- training input e.g. First Aid, Health and Safety, Arts Skills, Organisational Models, How Children Learn, Communication Skills etc.
What skills, qualities and commitment will the Youth Mentors already demonstrate?
All the Youth Mentors will be
- aged between 16 and 18 on 1 September
2006.
- able to demonstrate interest, commitment and skill in at least one Art Form
- willing to attend training events, work experience, mentoring sessions etc (approximately 20 days in total over the next 12 months)
- reliable, enthusiastic and flexible
What will the Youth Mentors get out of it?
This will be a fabulous opportunity for 15 young
people who are serious about developing their Arts Skills,
Personal Skills and Work Skills.
The work-based learning aspects of the scheme will enable the Youth Mentors to work closely with Artists and other Creative Professionals from whom they will glean skills, ideas and approaches that they will be able to develop in their own creative work. They will usually be supporting younger project participants and, in this way, developing leadership and teaching skills too.
The training element will provide the Youth Mentors with a range of really valuable transferable skills that they will be able to draw upon in their own personal and working lives for many years.
The whole scheme will be underpinned by
support and mentoring for the Youth Mentors from Youth Mentor
Co-ordinator and other members of the Rise Phoenix team.
Throughout the year there will be key times when all 15
of the Youth Mentors will come together to exchange experiences
and plan their next stages. The scheme will culminate in
a final collaborative project driven by the Youth Mentors
themselves.
A Certificate of Achievement will be presented to each Youth Mentor who successfully completes their Individual Mentoring Programme and makes a final presentation of their experiences. This presentation could be in a variety of media. Other forms of accreditation are currently being researched.
How will the scheme be managed?
Rise Phoenix is strongly committed to making
sure that the Youth Mentor Scheme is relevant, rigorous,
fun and safe. The scheme will be coordinated on a part time
basis by the Youth Mentor Coordinator. During individual
placements and events the Youth Mentors will have an identified
‘supervisor’ who will ensure that they are clear
about their role and all aspects of Health and Safety within
the given project. All supervisors, and other adults with
whom the Youth Mentors will work closely, will be subject
to a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure. All activities
will be covered by Rise Phoenix’s Public Liability
Insurance or that of any other hosting organisation. There
will be no charge for being involved in the scheme. Thanks
to funding from The Bridge House Trust all Rise Phoenix’s
costs are covered and any travel or similar expenses incurred
by the Youth Mentors will be reimbursed.
